On Monday, February 13, The Real Estate Council hosted new City of Dallas Manager T.C. Broadnax at a welcome reception and briefing at TREC’s office. Just one week on the job, Mr. Broadnax shared some of his goals and asked TREC members for feedback.
Mr. Broadnax brings city management experience from San Antonio, and Tacoma, Washington. He described his approach as detailed, innovative but administrative and focused on implementation. He finds taking the long view is critical to tackle a city’s challenges.
As Mr. Broadnax takes the helm of city services and operations, he emphasized the importance of transparency, responsiveness and inclusivity. He hopes to bring fresh eyes to longstanding and ingrained challenges for the city. Among his staff, he aims to encourage a “can-do” spirit and empower his team to explore new ways to solve programs.
TREC members then offered up their hopes and concerns for the City of Dallas. Walkability, civic engagement and predictability of city processes ranked among the top items discussed. Linda McMahon, president & CEO of TREC, provided a brief overview of TREC’s impact on Dallas and shared a list of top priorities in 2017. Priorities include:

  • Development Process Improvement
Clear and streamlined processing of development project proposals in the City of Dallas is an ongoing priority for TREC.
  • Affordable Housing
Providing housing accessible to all members of our community is an essential component of a healthy economy. TREC is dedicated to promoting housing options accessible to a range of household incomes through policies that acknowledge the ongoing opportunities and challenges of these efforts.
  • Mobility and Transportation
Visionary thinking on transportation and its relationship to the economic growth of our region is a priority of TREC. The vision for North Texas’ future must be long-range, focusing on the best solutions for our region in 50 to 100 years. Future planning must promote multimodal transportation options encouraging vibrancy, sustainability and inclusivity in our City.

After the question and answer session, guests mingled and chatted with Mr. Broadnax, who turns out to be a huge basketball fan, especially the San Antonio Spurs. The Real Estate Council is looking forward to working with Mr. Broadnax to help build the city you’ve imagined.
