Eric Krueger, Balfour Beatty Construction
2016 Giving Gala Chair
I hear you are the quite the chef. What do you enjoy about cooking? What is your favorite dish to prepare?
There are two aspects I enjoy the most. One is the recipe and the result. A recipe can be similar to a book. The book cover can look really interesting, but many times you don’t know if you enjoyed it until you get to the end. A recipe can be the same. Some look great, but don’t turn out as hoped while others can be a pleasant surprise. The second is seeing the enjoyment and satisfaction of whomever I am cooking for. It can be a great feeling.
I really don’t have a single favorite as I experiment all the time, especially on guests. My favorite is usually the last thing I made that was enjoyable!
If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?
I love Europe for all the history and various cultures (including food!). My heaven on earth is Western North Carolina in the Smokies. My wife, Shari, and I have a place there and we love to hike and enjoy the temperate climate.
What particular skills or talents are most essential to be effective in your position?
Three things immediately come to mind. The first is Servant Leadership. Understanding when to lead and when to serve. It is a journey that I have been on for the last 20 years. The second follows closely to the first and that is to seek to understand before being understood. The third is I expect excellence in myself and others. Servant Leadership and excellence can co-exist, but it is a delicate balance.
What do you enjoy most about working in the commercial real estate business?
First is seeing the growth of those in our industry that I have worked closely with here in North Texas over the past 20 years. I admire how many have gone from being the young, outgoing individual to now leading their organization in various ways. The second is seeing plans and dreams become reality. There is something special about seeing the physical outcome of your efforts. Maybe that is why I still mow my own grass!
As this year’s Giving Gala Chair, what are you most excited about?
The most exciting aspect of the Gala, which I have enjoyed for many years, are the funds we raise for the selected groups who help those in need in our community. We at TREC have an important and necessary impact on many. I am also excited about our theme and party atmosphere we are creating this year. We will have a New Orleans Jazz feel with a great band, Cajun-style food and a hurricane and beignet bar. TREC staff and my committee have worked hard to change things up in a positive way and we will all have a wonderful evening! I encourage those who have not yet participated to do so.
