Liz Trocchio Smith, The Trocchio Advantage
Former Executive Leadership Program Facilitator
What are some of the benefits of participating in ongoing leadership development training as one progresses through their career?
As professionals, we should always be learning. In this competitive real estate market, you want to have an advantage over others. Continuous learning and growing is part of that advantage. Leadership development helps improve your skills and abilities and teaches you things about yourself that are essential as you grow in your professional career. You need to learn how to take care of yourself before you can make an impact on others.
What kinds of skills should commercial real estate professionals look to hone as they progress through their careers?
As we advance, our responsibilities grow and the way we lead changes. Learning to listen is the most important skill. I always say God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason! Being able to manage people is critical as well. Along with managing people, professionals need to learn how to have crucial conversations. When you have excelled into a leadership position, you are under more pressure to make tough decisions. Learn how to make them.
Why does the Executive Leadership Program begin with participants completing the Gallup StrengthsFinder assessment?
Gallup’s philosophy is to have individuals, teams, and companies stop trying to be more of who you’re not, and start focusing on what naturally makes you powerful and unique. When we focus on our strengths, we can really understand the things we naturally do every day and capitalize on what we are best at doing. In the ELP, we want participants to understand themselves as well as why they do the things they do. The Gallup StrengthsFinder assessment helps us set the platform to do just that.
In addition to founding The Trocchio Advantage, you’ve also had a very successful commercial real estate career here in Dallas, and thus have had access to unique vantage points throughout the city. Where is the best view in Dallas?
There are so many great places; however, I love the Dallas Arboretum because you have White Rock Lake in view when you look downtown. You just can’t beat that!
TREC’s guiding principle and challenge to its members is to Build the City You’ve Imagined. What does that phrase mean to you?
Pride of ownership is so important to me and when you live in a great city like Dallas, we all need to continue to make improvements. It takes a village. Not just within the commercial real estate industry, but the citizens of Dallas as a whole need to give back and pay it forward. Set the example so our legacy is to build a great city for those that will follow in our footsteps.
