Get dressed. Brush your teeth. Walk the dog. Chances are, your typical morning is packed with responsibilities you need to fulfill before leaving for work. But crossing items off your to-do list does not necessarily mean you’re ready to start your day. You need the right items. You need the right routine.
Luckily, according to Nashville, Tenn.-based fitness coach and health & wellness consultant Julian Hayes, you don’t need a lot of time in the morning to physically and mentally prepare yourself for whatever you’re about to face in the world. Twenty minutes a day will suffice.
Here are the highlights of his four-step plan:
Exercise: No need to hit the gym. Five minutes of alternating pushups and squats — or any kind of movement — will send energy throughout your body and release endorphins that improve your mood and cognition.
Hydrate and express gratitude: Drink some water, and , mull over three things you’re grateful for while you do it. Doing so will put you in an abundant mindset open to positive opportunities and outcomes.
Meditate: Depressed? Burnt out? Stressed? Overwhelmed? Meditation, even for a few minutes each morning, will help center your internal self.
Review: What do you need to accomplish today? What are your goals? Are you driven by a sense of purpose? Writing these things down and reading them aloud each day will help you identify ways of inching closer to eventually achieving them.
