Advocacy is a cornerstone of TREC’s new strategic plan, critical to building the strongest commercial real estate community in North Texas. It is one of five focus areas that will guide us in allocating resources, shaping key initiatives, and addressing emerging needs in the industry and community over the next three years.
Through the work of our Public Policy Committee, TREC Political Action Committee (PAC), and our various policy working groups, we will continue to champion public policies that support responsible real estate development and economic growth. We aim to become the go-to resource for development-related policy decisions throughout our region and across the state.
Here’s how we plan to achieve our advocacy goals:
Influence the Rewrite of Dallas’ Development Code
TREC will play a significant role in shaping the city’s updated development code to encourage responsible and thoughtful development practices. We will convene a Development Code Task Force of TREC members to review proposals and recommend positions, host listening sessions and gather feedback from members on proposed changes, and submit expert testimony on our positions to the city.
Unify Our Statewide Advocacy Efforts
We believe that aligning with other real estate councils across Texas and sharing resources will amplify our voice and strengthen our collective impact, particularly in Austin. Ahead of each legislative session, we will develop a document of shared priorities with our organizational counterparts, and hold quarterly meetings throughout the year to maintain our alignment. We will also identify opportunities to collaborate on lobbying efforts as they arise.
Engage With Suburban Cities to Influence Development Policy
To expand our advocacy impact beyond Dallas, we plan to engage with neighboring North Texas cities on key development issues to influence future policy. We will communicate these initiatives proactively with TREC members and share our priorities and expectations with elected officials, utilizing our voting record and collected regional data to inform future candidate endorsement.
